Magdalen Court School

Gifted & Talented Pupils

Magdalen Court School has long-established success with pupils who are 'Gifted & Talented'. The individual and small-group support for each pupil builds on their particular talents, ensuring they are constantly challenged, enabling faster progress, retaining the attention & keeping them focused on their work.

There are a number of highly qualified staff who help monitor your child's progress. Including; Educational Physiologists; Mr Michael Hughes B.A. M.A. A.F.B.P.S. Who has worked with our school for some 19 years.

Magdalen Court School provides specialist provision for children who are Gifted & Talented. We put in place a carefully structured transition plan for transfer to our school & set plans into place for the coordination of work at both home & school.

Magdalen Court School create a Personal Plan for Children to ensure that Parents, Pupil & Staff, are all aiming to work in collaboration, in order to work towards offering every child an education which suits them.

Funding: in certain cases it is possible to obtain help from a number of Educational Trusts who kindly support our school and in certain cases, from D.C.C. (Devon County Council).

On entry, or at a prior interview, your Child’s Talents are assessed by our specialist staff, with the provision of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is created and modified as your child progresses through the school. The IEP is circulated to all academic departments, enabling cross-curricular help, & extension to studies.

Learning and knowledge retention is always easier if it's fun and our skilled staff will recognise very quickly just what stimulates your child; from the wealth of resources at our disposal, We will do our best to harness your child's talents, offering differentiation in his/her classes, promoting success on learning tasks, thinking skills, organisational skills & planning.

Strengths of the school, which enhance your child's potential when Gifted & Talented:

  • Early GCSE's. Many children start their GCSE courses at approx 12 years, (10 years is the record at Magdalen Court School). By engaging with these one at a time at a younger age, a sense of excitement & stimulation are created. We are looking for A* to C grades & offer over 30 subjects from Photography, Graphics, Expressive Arts, Drama, PE, Art, Drama, PE, Science Modules. The Magdalen Court School record is 16 GCSE's. The world is their oyster for 'A' levels.
  • In addition to the mainstream subjects, the school aims to teach organisational and study skills. Small class sizes ensure individual attention for each student.Magdalen Court School Art
  • All the subjects are presented and taught, taking into account the many characteristics of those children who are gifted.
  • Thus the programme is designed to encourage each student to develop their full abilities and to increase their levels of maturity and responsibility as they progress through the school. It is important to be aware that students have ultimately to leave, survive and thrive in the real world.
  • Magdalen Court School aims to teach the whole child, taking into consideration their strengths, weaknesses and individuality.
  • Dyslexic children are encouraged to work towards their full potential. We aim to teach them within a caring, happy and structured framework. Often the children begin to develop the self-respect, self-reliance and self-discipline which they are so desperately seeking and needing.
